Special Issue Introduction
Africa and West Asia are vast and culturally diverse regions, which appear to be underrepresented in the global perception in terms of scientific research. The number of publications of research articles in renowned scientific journals by authors from these regions is relatively small. But despite difficult circumstances in many cases, several cancer research groups in Africa and West Asia have managed to establish sophisticated research projects over the last decades, which definitely deserve an accurate presentation. Efforts in this regard would be a great benefit to the global medical science community, and eventually to cancer patients all over the world.
Thus, this special issue is intended to become a valuable opportunity for oncologists and other cancer experts, such as tumor biologists and medicinal chemists who work at institutes in Africa or West Asia, to publish their current cancer drug resistance research projects and outcomes, and to present their work to a global audience of cancer scientists. It is expected that this special issue will also incite prospering research networks between scientists from Africa or West Asia and research groups from other regions such as North America, Europe, and East Asia in the future.
Local drugs and drug developments to overcome cancer drug resistance, the identification and investigation of drug resistance mechanisms, and cancer drug resistance issues of certain cancer diseases displaying distinctly higher local incidences in Africa or West Asia than in other parts of the world, comprise the main subjects covered by this special issue. But this special issue is not restricted to these topics, and submissions from Africa and West Asia dealing with other cancer drug resistance subjects are also highly welcome.
